Downey is a historic and bustling city located in Los Angeles County. The city is located 13 miles southeast of downtown L.A. It is most well known as the birthplace of the famed Apollo space program. At the time of the 2010 U.S. census, the city had a total population of 112,214. This was up from 106,978 at the taking of the 2000 census. Also according to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 13 square miles. 12.6 square miles of this is land, with the other 0.4 square miles being made up of water. Pico Rivera is located in the northeast of Downey, the cities of Bell Gardens and South Gate border it in the northwest and west, Bellflower and Paramount are in the south, and Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs are bordering in the east. Downey was featured in part of the hit 2008 American action-comedy film: Pineapple Express, which starred Seth Rogen and James Franco. Varios buildings along the city’s Florence Avenue can be seen in a scene early in the film when the main character played by Rogen is driving around. Downey is also the site of the location where Glen Bell opened the very first Taco Bell restaurant in March of 1962. Downey was officially incorporated as a city in 1956, and instated a charter form of its current government in 1964. Factories and suburban homes replaced the city’s old farms after the end of World War II. The largest employer in the city back then was Vultee Aircraft, then North American Aviation, which eventually became Boeing, whose headquarters were also the birth site of the technology for the Apollo space program and the Space Shuttle. For some 70 years, Rockwell NASA plant in Downey tested and produced most of the greatest missile, aviation and space endeavors of the 20th century. Downey is located just five miles from Orange County, and 11 miles from the scenic California Pacific Coastline. The average minimum temperature in Downey is 46 degrees, while the average maximum temperature annually is a fair 83 degrees. Downey is located 121 feet above sea level and has low prevailing winds coming in from the West. The city’s average rainfall is about 15 inches annually. Downey also offers a varied range of housing situations. About 60 percent of all dwelling units are single-family homes while the other 40 percent are condos and apartments.
